Eicosanoid Formation and Action
Eicosanoids are formed in the body from essential 20-carbon highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA). They are potent bioactive hormone-like mediators. More vigorous formation and action of n-6 compared to n-3 eicosanoids give both benefit and harm. Over-reactions by n-6 mediators shift healthy physiology toward pathophysiology.
More vigorous actions by n-6 than n-3 eicosanoids lead to unwanted health conditions. (1.3 min.video). Balance of tissue HUFA leads to balance in eicosanoid actions.
